The "Detachment Hotel" known as the Kennedy Bunker actually only has an area of 140 m2 and was opened in 1960. The facility was designed to protect the then incumbent President John F. Kennedy from nuclear attacks when he was at his family's home in Palm Beach. The existence of the bunker facility was kept secret until 1974, despite its closure in 1963. In 1998 the bunker was opened to the public for the first time and classified as a historical site. Since 2017 the site is no longer accessible.
